ComboBoxItem Filtering Explicit Dropdown

As described in documentation of comboboxitem filtering :http://www.smartclient.com/docs/9.1/a/b/c/go.html#group..comboBoxFiltering :
"If the user explicitly shows the down-down pickList, via either clicking on the drop down icon or using the Ctrl+Arrow Down key combination, the typed-in value is ignored for filtering. "

Is there a way to alter this behavior such that when user explicitly shows the drop down pickList, the existing typed-in value is always respected for filtering?
